What to do when someone passed away?
1. Report the Death
If a death occurs outside a medical facility, call an ambulance and the police immediately. Avoid touching the deceased or disturbing the scene if possible. If the cause of death is clear, authorized medical personnel or police will issue a blue copy of the death registration/burial permit (JPN.LM02, Amendment 1/11). If the cause of death cannot be determined on site or requires further investigation, the body may be moved to a designated hospital for an autopsy before issuing the permit.
2. Register the Death to Obtain the Death Certificate:
To register the death, submit the blue death registration/burial permit (JPN.LM02, Amendment 1/11), the original identity card of the deceased, and your own original identity card at the nearest National Registration Department (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara). Note that the required documents may vary in Sabah and Sarawak. If all documents are in order, the Death Certificate will be issued within a week.
3. Arrange the Funeral with a Bereavement Care Provider:
With the blue copy of the death registration/burial permit (JPN.LM02, Amendment 1/11), you can engage a bereavement care provider or funeral home to make funeral arrangements. A professional provider will offer comprehensive services, from collecting the body to interment, guiding you every step of the way and addressing all your concerns. Exceptional providers also offer post-funeral support services.
